Spanish performer Elsa Montenegro in Francesca Marti’s video The Years Before (2018), in which the actress plays the role of the aged Julia Galan, wearing her jacket and reading glasses, and reading from one of her favourite books of poetry.

First exhibited in 2013, the 6th edition of Julia Galan vista por artistas del mundo (Julia Galan as seen by artists around the world) took place in the Casa de la Cultura in Grado in Spain, from July 30 until mid-September, 2020. The ever-growing collection now comprises 242 works by 151 artists from 30 countries, including Pedro Cabrita Reis (Portugal), Jan Fabre (Belgium), Tatsumi Orimoto (Japan), Ola Kolehmainen (Finland), Rafa Macarrón (Spain) and Bernar Venet (France). Conceived and organized by art critic and magazine publisher Fernando Galan, the collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos and mixed media works are specifically dedicated to Julia Galan and the role of the mother in contemporary art, with the idea of capturing aspects of frailty, maternity, intimacy and the passing of time.
The 18 contemporary artists from 7 countries who participated in the 6th exhibition in Grado in 2020 were Laurence Aegerter (Netherlands), Samuel Armas, Batista (Cuba), Klaus Berends (Germany), Pepe Buitrago, Carlos Cuenllas, Gonzalo García, Arturo Garrido, Luis Gordillo, Elena Goñi, Markus Huemer (Austria), Francesca Martí, Enrique Marty, Frank Gerritz (Germany), Itziar Sánchez, Joaquín Sánchez (Paraguay), Steve Schepens (Belgium) and José Luis Serzo.
